Despite a factually lucid history behind the stations, I grew fascinated by the specifics which slipped outside that history’s scope. The details of Soviet design, and the opaque specificity of found images served me as entry points into a history that reads instead like a parallel universe. This project is the result of a residency at the Center for Land Use Interpretation’s facility in Wendover, Utah. To commemorate the visit, the sculptor John Karl Daniels created a life-size butter sculpture of the former President. Looking at Daniel’s body of work today, it seems monotonous in its depictions of heroic white men, dead and alive. The butter sculpture of Roosevelt sculpture is particularly heavy-handed, depicting the President in full safari gear with his foot on the head of a lion we assume he has recently killed. Today, the work seems almost cartoonish in its depiction of a violent, imperialist white masculinity. Yet, when we imagine this form rendered in the fatty medium of refrigerated butter, it veers toward the absurd. While it exists today as only a single photograph, this object served as the point of departure for my project at Franconia Sculpture Park. This project was created through the Open Studio Fellowship at Franconia Sculpture Park, in June and July of 2018. The piece integrates robotic elements, a re-created Modernist sculpture, and a series of water pumps to create a large-scale, improvised fountain. Through these combined forms, the work alludes to disruptive events on the human horizon, hinting at concerns such as sea level rise, automation, and the rise of authoritarianism. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5a2c74c5d55b41f5f952c25a/1633521997263-RN1AYH7FW3KG878NMUIN/DSC01772_FInal.jpg A Fountain for a Dark Future The central element of the work is a larger-than-life re-creation of Umberto Boccioni’s iconic sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space. This work, created in 1913, sought to depict the dynamism and motion which fascinated the Italian Futurists. Futurism also harbored darker tendencies, celebrating war and destruction as ‘cleansing forces’. This attitude seems to rhyme with the ‘move fast and break things’ ideology expounded in contemporary Silicon Valley. Similarly, the embrace of Mussolini by the Futurists has an echo in the recent electoral successes of authoritarian right-wing ideology around the world. In the current moment of compounding and interconnected crises, the work hints at a sterile, atomized and and inhuman future which may await us if we, collectively, allow these catastrophes to play out to their logical conclusions.
